Illustrative production cost report

The same 100 units. A higher unit cost.

For a completed batch of 100 identical finished units, compare expected costs with recorded costs using the same costing policy.

Batch costEstimateActual
Direct materials$2,000$2,300
Direct labor$1,500$1,600
Applied manufacturing overhead$500$600
Total production cost$4,000$4,500
Cost per finished unit$40$45

The $5 increase per unit comprises $3 in materials, $1 in labor and $1 in applied overhead. Check purchase prices, material usage, labor time and the overhead calculation before revising prices.

Assumes no unfinished units or abnormal waste. The Actual column includes applied overhead; reconcile it to actual overhead and record any required adjustments before financial reporting. Fixed production overhead is allocated using normal capacity. The allocation is not necessarily a cash payment for this batch. Selling, general administrative and financing costs are excluded.

Your questions

Before you get started.

Can you help assess the cost of a custom order?

Yes. The material, labor and overhead records are assessed with you. The analysis identifies available costs and missing information.

What if inventory records don't match the books?

Differences between the records are identified and the work needed is agreed with you. You remain responsible for physical stock counts and production records.
